The Austro-Hungarian POW Camps
The extension of the war necessitated the building of facilities for the growing number of Prisoners of War (POW). In the spring of 1916 the following complete list of such camps was published in the Beiblatt Nr.13 zum Verordnungsblatt für das k.u.k. Heer:

The circumstances of the war made it necessary to raise special units for guarding and escorting POWs. In the Austrian as well as in the Hungarian Landsturm so-called Landsturm-Wachbataillone were raised during 1916 to run the numerous camps and facilities for non-commissioned and commissioned (Offiziers-Stationen) personnel. These Landsturm-Wachbataillone should not be mixed up with the existing (k.u.k., k.k. and k.u.) Wachkompanies - the sole employment of the Landsturm-Wachbataillione was the handling of POWs while the Wachkompanies carried out routine guard duties at normal military facilities. The Landsturm-Wachbataillons of the k.k. Landsturm were numbered from 1 up to 22 using Arabic figures while those of the k.u. Landsturm used roman numbers from I up to XIX. Attached to each Landsturm-Wachbataillon (Ldst-WachBaon) was a so-called Kriegsgefangenen-Begleitkompanie (KgfBglKomp) with the same number as the battalion. While the battalions had to run and guard the camps themselves the attached companies had to guard the POWs on outside working parties and suchlike.
With Beiblatt Nr.8 zum Verordnungsblatt des k.u.k. Heeres of 1917 the following new list of POW facilities was published with detailed additional information. The column "officers" shows if the particular camp had facilities to accommodate officers there and the nationalities were displayed in the columns "Lager" (non-commissioned) and "OffzAbt" (commissioned) by the following letter: E=British (and other Commonwealth), F=France, I=Italians, M=Montenegrins, R=Russians, Ru=Romanians, S=Serbians; (As the companies always served at the same locations as the battalions they were not separately listed in the table below.)
